Privacy
Mela Academy (“Mela”, “we”) runs the Mela exam-practice app on the web, in Telegram and on Android. This page explains, in plain words, what we collect about students and why.
What we collect
- The student's full name, as typed at sign-up.
- A mobile phone number, used to log in with an SMS code.
- The grade (6 or 8) and, if given, the school.
- Practice progress: which questions were answered, first and last answers, and mock exam results.
- Payment requests: the payment code, grade, amount, the reference number of the telebirr or bank payment, and when it was approved or rejected.
- If the student connects Telegram: the Telegram user ID (not the Telegram name), so the bot can send payment messages and log the student in.
Why we use it
- To create the account and log the student in.
- To give access to the grade that was paid for and to check payments.
- To show progress and the questions answered wrongly, on every device.
- To send login codes by SMS and payment messages on Telegram.
- To find errors and understand which parts of Mela are used, without names or phone numbers.
Who processes it for us
- Supabase: accounts, login and the database.
- Cloudflare: hosting the app and this site, and storing the exam files.
- Bunny: playing the explanation videos.
- AfroMessage: sending login codes by SMS.
- Telegram: the Mela bot and the Mini App, if the student uses them.
- Sentry: error reports, with the Mela account number only (no name, phone or email).
- PostHog: usage counts such as “a question was answered”, with the Mela account number only (no name, phone or email). Browsers that ask not to be tracked send nothing.
We do not sell personal data and do not show advertising.
Children and parents
Mela is made for students in Grade 6 and Grade 8, who are children. A parent or guardian should create the account with the child or agree to it, and often pays. Parents can ask us to see, correct or delete their child's data.
How long we keep it
We keep the account while it is used. Payment records are kept for accounting, as the law requires, but without the student's name or phone number once the account is deleted.
Deleting an account
In Mela, open Profile → Delete my account and confirm with an SMS code. The login, profile, Telegram link and progress are deleted at once.
